About this deal

These are] haunted characters who could have walked, quite coolly, out of a Joyce Carol Oates or Koji Suzuki creation….

Revenge (Vintage Editions) eBook : Ogawa, Yoko, Snyder Revenge (Vintage Editions) eBook : Ogawa, Yoko, Snyder

I could see her taking the steaming sponge cakes from the oven, piping on the cream, and arranging each strawberry with infinite care.He devises clever maths riddles - based on her shoe size or her birthday - and the numbers reveal a sheltering and poetic world to both the Housekeeper and her ten-year-old son. Yoko Ogawa is an absolute master of the Gothic at its most beautiful and dangerous, and Revenge is a collection that deepens and darkens with every story you read. Desire meets with impulse and erupts, attracting the attention of the surgeon's neighbor---who is drawn to a decaying residence that is now home to instruments of human torture. Ogawa's writing is simple and effective, and her technique for merging the tales demonstrates her mastery of the written word. In her work, Ogawa tends to use female narrators who are distanced from those around them, aiding in the sometimes-strange predicaments they get themselves into.

Revenge: Eleven Dark Tales: Ogawa, Yoko, Snyder, Stephen

I was waiting for the bite, and the "horror" that I was promised, the nasty pinch on the ass that makes you bleed. Almost no one is willing to speak out or go against the grain: life -- and death -- continue like always, even if or as they have been shaken to the core of their existence. Cakes, pies, and chocolates were carefully arranged in a glass case, and tins of cookies lined shelves on either side. The Cafeteria in the Evening and a Pool in the Rain" (Yūgure no kyūshoku shitsu to ame no pūru, 夕暮れの給食室と雨のプール, 1991); translated by Stephen Snyder, The New Yorker, 9/2004.

The collection has been described repeatedly as “Japanese Gothic,” a label which captures some of the atmosphere of ominous mystery in the stories, but which fails to convey the sense of almost sterile anonymity of her characters, or the precision with which Ogawa slowly builds a sense of horror to a crescendo by the precise description and accrual of detail after detail. The 2005 French film L'Annulaire ( The Ringfinger) was based in part on Ogawa's Kusuriyubi no hyōhon. The real horror isn’t the death, but the drugged blindness of the narrator’s infatuation on the murderer—a fixation intense enough to anesthetize an appropriate moral or emotional response. None of the protagonists knows of the others existence until they pop up in another story, so one has to read carefully in case they miss a detail that could occur later on. BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Something that should, by all rights, exist is lacking, while the extraneous thing that is left achieves a kind of warped excess. Each story from the first to the last is linked either by a mysterious happening or, in some cases, what seems like the passing of a baton in a relay, each story ratcheting up the tension, until the last story turns us back to the first in what almost seems like an Escher painting. The bulk of the story is taken up by his remembering a particular trip to the zoo where Mama remarked on the absurdity of giraffes' long necks. Nothing appeared to have changed, except that the shadow of the clock tower had grown longer and thinner. Once he has a prototype for the bag, he goes to the club where she works, and watches her sing, obsessing over every movement and every measure she takes to conceal her heart.
