About this deal

Dimple Athavia, founder of All Things Drinks, chaired a group that included: Joyce Chou, translation project manager at the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET); and Sara Jane Eichler, founder of the Negroni Club UK. It uses nine botanicals including hemp, Himalayan juniper, coriander, lavender, rosemary, caraway seeds, cinnamon, lemongrass and butterfly pea flower. Their gin is made from a wheat-based spirit, infused with botanicals with juniper berries from Macedonia, citrus from Spain and angelica root from Germany.

The 20% ABV range of Edinburgh Gin liqueurs include Raspberry, Elderflower, Plum & Vanilla, and Rhubarb & Ginger. With a category this big, The Spirits Business rounded up 10 panels of judges in June to decide which products were worthy of Master, Gold and Silver medals. Gin has been through a thousand revolutions (and will go through a thousand more), and while it’s very much shaken off its Granny tag in Europe, America and Australia, it’s not quite the hipster tipple of choice in South Asia. Not yet, anyway. Nao Spirits founder Anand Virmani is just one of many hoping to change that perception. “The Indian drinks industry is confusing, inconsistent and massive. It’s also mainly geared towards beer and brown spirits,” he told us. “Gin has been seen as an old-person’s drink, and one that holds it rightful place at Gymkhana and the likes. Local Gin is also seen (often quite rightly) as a mass-produced, industrial product.” Third Eye Distillery launched its first gin, Stranger & Sons , in September 2018 in Goa, where it is produced. "Our botanicals were crafted together taking inspiration from our kitchens and farmers," says Sakshi Saigal, who co-founded Stranger & Sons Gin with Vidur Gupta and her husband Rahul Mehra, who is also co-founder of Gateway Brewing Co. and SVAMI artisanal tonic waters and mixers. Goa-based Stranger & Sons was created in 2018 by Sakshi Saigal, Rahul Mehra and Vidur Gupta’s Third Eye Distillery.Master medallist Mermaid Gin was described as “soft and herbal” with “lovely citrus notes” by the judges, who added that it would make a “great Martini”.

Antony Moss MW led a panel that included: Angelo Sparvoli, head bartender, St James Bar; and Graham McAteer, spirit partnerships lead at Craft Gin Club. The Gin Masters 2023 competition is the first of two blind tastings dedicated to the category, with the first instalment held at private members club Home House in London. In the Cask Aged flight, González Byass’ London Nº1 Sherry Cask scored highly with the judges for being “light, fresh and fruity with a good balance of complexity”.

SIP Awards 2021, USA (Gold), SIP Awards 2020, USA (Double Gold), Bartenders Spirit Awards 2020, USA (Gold), Bottled at 43.8% ABV, the gin is made with cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and olive leaf from three olive varieties, which have been combined with seven Australian botanicals. It was launched in 2018 and it is a triple-distilled neutral grain spirit which is re-distilled in a traditional copper pot. Greater Than Gin was designed with scalability in mind so that if the opportunity came, the quality could remain consistent. Multi shot methods, tried and tested botanicals and a ruthless approach to quality testing and consistency. The trio were adamant about using Himalayan juniper when they learnt about its use in Ayurvedic medicines in India. However, it took a couple of wild goose chases before Anand finally laid his hands on the elusive ingredient.
