This article is part of our larger Christmas and Advent resource library centered around the events leading up to the birth of Jesus Christ. We hope these articles help you understand the meaning and story behind important Christian holidays and dates and encourage you as you take time to reflect on all that God has done for us through his son Jesus Christ! The Christmas season gives a month-long focus on celebrating God and what he does for us. It fills my heart with awe and brings a smile to my face when I consider how generous and kind he is. He is loving and good and gave us the best Christmas gift — the opportunity to receive eternal life and a close relationship with him. In recent times, however, Advent has undergone a shift in emphasis, reflected in a change of colors used in many churches. Many Protestant churches now use blue to distinguish the Season of Advent from Lent. Royal Blue is sometimes used as a symbol of royalty. A blank Christmas coloring countdown. Your child can draw a picture for each of the numbered days of advent and then give it as a gift to a sibling or friend to color in

For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” ( Luke 2:10-11). Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore ( Isaiah 9:6-7). The third Sunday of Advent brings us to Joy. The color pink represents rejoicing. We light the previous two purple candles and then light this week’s pink one. Rejoicing is our response to the Good News — joy that our Messiah has come. Some churches use Bright Blue to symbolize the night sky, the anticipation of the impending announcement of the King’s coming, or to symbolize the waters of Genesis 1, the beginning of a new creation. Some churches, including some Catholic churches, use blue violet ( Sarum blue) to preserve the traditional use of purple while providing a visual distinction between the purple or red violet of Lent. What About Red and Green? Colouring supplies of your choice (we used a selection ofwatercolour paints, pencils, crayons and pens)

The traditions of Advent include the color of dark “royal” purple or Sarum blue (from the Medieval Sarum rite). Both symbolize preparation, penitence and royalty to welcome the new King. The purple of Advent is also the color of suffering used during Lent and Holy Week. This points to an important connection between Jesus’ birth and death. The closer one gets to Christmas, the more the candles get lit, and the brighter it shines. Advent moves us through the prophecies about Christ, to the hope he provides, to the joy he brings, and the love he gives. As we move through each week, the wreath glows brightly with significance. Let's take a look at the different advent candle colors and their beautiful meaning and symbolism. The nativity, the Incarnation, cannot be separated from the crucifixion. The purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world, of the “Word made flesh” and dwelling among us, is to reveal God and His grace to the world through Jesus’ life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection. To reflect this emphasis, originally Advent was a time of penitence and fasting, much as the Season of Lent and so shared the color of Lent. Gaudette Sunday

On the fourth Sunday of Advent, we reach the culmination of Love. The Messiah comes in love and righteousness. The angels filled the sky with the greatest news of love. During the Advent season, we remember, and we look forward. In these four weeks, we meditate on Jesus’ sacrifice that brings us to repentance and we anticipate his return. In the busyness of the Christmas season, celebrating Advent provides us a time to focus our hearts on Jesus. For the Eastern Orthodox Church, Advent has been a time of fasting and penitence, similar to Lent. So, while some church traditions focus on penitence during Advent, which is still appropriate, the spirit of that expectation from the Old Testament is better captured with a joyous sense of expectancy. Rather than a time of mourning and fasting, Advent is celebrated as a time of joy and happiness as we await the coming of the King. I’m so pleased to be able to share this printable Christmas countdown calendar for kids with you because I think it’s such a sweet design! Red and Green are more secular colors of Christmas. They derive from older European practices of using evergreens and holly to symbolize ongoing life and hope that Christ’s birth brings into a cold world. Although red and green are often used as part of the church decorations, they are never used as liturgical colors during Advent since those colors have other uses in other parts of the church year.I also think it’s really nice to be able to have an activity to do each day as well as just the traditional sweet filled advent calendars. We’ll be having chocolate calendars too but if you are looking for a sweet free one then this is a great sugar-free countdown alternative. A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken” ( Isaiah 40:3-5).
