About this deal

Chestnut Avenue achieved a less welcome footnote to history between the two World Wars. It was the home of Millicent "Scat" Bullivant, a leading light in East London fascism. The holding deposit is the equivalent of one week’s rent, which once paid, is offset against the total balance due. His report, of 1855, had the rather clumsy title of Report of the General Board of Health on a Preliminary Inquiry into the Sewerage, Drainage and Supply of Water, and the sanitary Conditions of the Inhabitants of the Parish of West Ham in the County of Essex. Owen was born and educated in Forest Gate. He is now a Financial Times journalist, living in Walthamstow with his wife and two young sons. The cutting also shows the impact of the Great Eastern Railway (the current Liverpool Street line) in opening the area up to development, allowing rapid movement of people and goods to central London. It is comparable to CrossRail opening up Forest Gate again from 2018.

Built on a Lie – The Rise and Fall of Neil Woodford and the Fate of Middle England’s Money– Owen Walker The Great Eastern arrived at Forest Gate in 1839. The army of clerks in the City of London needed housing and new suburbs sprang up to meet the demand as shown on the next map.is the estimated property value as of today. This is calculated by considering the last sale price and average growth of 19.762025177169143% per year in the region. Robert Nurden was born seven months before his grandfather died. He was determined to find out what drove this complex and contradictory man, trapped Between Heaven and Earth. Bullivant was the daughter of middle class conservatives from Norfolk and was employed as the secretary to the sales manager at Yardley, the cosmetics company, the core of whose iconic headquarters survives on the approach to Bow Bridge, in Stratford. She lived at 94 Chestnut Avenue.

The press cutting, above, shows that even in the 1890s in Carnarvon Road, just this side of Stratford, there were active market gardens and horticultural producers. This is the third in an occasional series of articl es by local historian, Peter Williams, who specialises in Newham housing, maps and local history. In each he looks, in detail, at the history of particular streets in Forest Gate. This story, set within a wider narrative of the campaign to preserve the London commons, is told in Mark Gorman’s new book Saving the People’s Forest: Open spaces, enclosure and popular protest in mid-Victorian London. The focus here is not on the metropolitan upper middle-class campaigners, but instead on the grass roots movement whose popular protests would steer the campaign towards its successful conclusion. This campaign and other contests described in the book contributed significantly to the birth of what has become the modern-day “right to roam”. In Built on a Lie, the Financial Times reporter who broke and followed the story, Owen Walker reveals the disastrous failings of Woodford, the greed at the heart of his operation, the flaws of an industry in thrall to its star performers and the dangers of limited regulation. With exclusive access to Woodford’s inner circle, the author reveals the full, jaw-dropping story of Europe’s biggest investment scandal in a decade. Out of all property types, Detached property has always been the most valued and flats are the lowest in valuation.

This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building. They add greatly to an understanding of social circumstances of the time, and describe some pretty poor public health and social conditions. The map below also marks the arrival of the Tottenham and Forest Gate Junction Railway (now the Barking-Gospel Oak) with Wanstead Park station opened 1894. This is an example of blatant marketing by the railway company, since it is nowhere near Wanstead Park proper. Their ultimate fate isn't known, but they recruited the local organiser, Arthur Beavan to the role of local organiser. He was a thug, who was detained, without trail, in 1940, following the outbreak of war with Germany.

You can also see Angell Pond at the junction of Capel and Woodford Roads, developed by West Ham council engineer Lewis Angell to assist drainage on the Flats, which were very boggy. A bandstand soon appeared too demolished in the 1950s. There were a number of these kind of societies in East London at the time, they were often known as Four Per Cent Societies. They were privately funded by non- exploitative investors/landlords, who wanted to build decent housing for working people, and in exchange were guaranteed a four per cent return on their capital - paid for from the rents. For details of the previous article on the nearby Woodford Road, the former Eagle and Child pub, Lord Lister clinic and cattle on Wanstead Flats, see here. That article also looked at the earlier Woodgrange farm and the original Forest Gate.Stratford had a wholesale fruit and vegetable market developed by the railway company in Burford Rd. Yet the chance discovery of hundreds of secret letters and diaries of three women – many quoted in this account – shattered the image. These amazing documents show in intriguing and often explicit detail that, as a husband and father of seven, he had an affair and liaisons with members of his congregation. Just how much did his family and friends know?
