I'm not Irish, never even been to Ireland so my entire experience of Irish families is based on reading Marian Keyes.

Sadhbh and Elaine open their hearts to the fragile Aisling, enveloping her into their warmth and care, always there for her when her life faces family crises and the neverending tears and hurt as she struggles to get over John. Armed with an never ending supply of Parma Violets (which I still hate to this day but my mum swore where a motion sickness remedy) w would then endure the long drive to Fishguard with mum shouting "don't make too much noise, you'll distract your father", "no, we're not nearly there yet" and "if you hit your sister one more time, I'll smack the back of your legs so hard you won't be able to sit down for a week! Feeling her life needs a radical overhaul, she moves in with HR work colleague, Sadhbh and her intriguing flatmate, Elaine, in a plush penthouse in Dublin. Only six hours ago, he was singing Mr Brightside with his eyes closed in the residents' bar and looking back now I'm fairly certain he was crying. There is drama, crazy antics, and pure comedic genius throughout interwoven with moments of compassion, sensitivity, and openness that really touched my heart. But with glamorous new flatmates, a scandal at work and a weird love square, Aisling has no idea what's about to hit her. At the moment, the page is bubbling over with excitement about the book, with Aislings, NFATRs and Majellas galore (and yes, the GJs, Mad Toms, and Australia Pauls too) sharing their joy at there (a) being a book and (b) the book being a wonderful read.

One day we started discussing a certain type of girl we'd noticed around town, one we both strongly identified with due to our culchie roots (I'm from Carlow, Emer's from Kildare). I think it was after we had written the second book and we sat down and I think our publisher would have been happy if we did a book every year until the end of time. To celebrate the launch of Oh My God What A Complete Aisling, The Novel, authors Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, along with publishers Gill Books are hosting a table quiz (what else? As family tragedy strikes and Aisling learns of family secrets, she is determined to support Sadhbh in her personal woes and troubles.Obwohl Aisling bereits 28 Jahre alt ist und in vielen Dingen eine total spießige und altbackene Denkweise hat, führt sie sich auf der anderen Seite auf wie eine Pubertierende. Desperate for her boyfriend of seven years to propose, she finds herself in the unfortunate position of being in a toilet cubicle at yet another friend's wedding listening to two of the guests from her table chatting about her little idiosyncrasies.

I was sort of intrigued, then thought better of it and didn't download the book, then my obsessive need to complete finish tasks made me download the book anyway. This is not a genre I usually read and, despite being Irish and having lived all my life in Ireland, the drinking, social, partying culture has never been part of my personal experience. She also appears to be the annoying office busybody who leaves passive-aggressive notes for their co-workers about the fridge and the dishwasher. It is also poignant, and having lost my father suddenly five years ago, and lived through some of the thoughts and scenes described, I found that part of the story too real – it was like being back in the hospital again, being told that there was no hope, that it could be weeks or even days (it was barely 36 hours), and fighting so hard to keep it all together instead of breaking down both then and at the funeral. Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, the creators of the much-loved Aisling character and the popular Facebook page ‘Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling’, bring Aisling to life in their novel about the quintessential country girl in the big smoke.Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling is set to ‘ramp up’ for its fifth and final book, as the authors said they want to end on a high. I completely adored this highly entertaining and comic look at the Irish cultural phenomena that is being an Aisling. Overall, I'm giving Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling 5 out of 5 and adding it to my five-star favourites shelf! It was like listening to someone trying to break a world record for speed and I honestly don't know how she had time to breathe. Ihr Verhalten ist so abstrus, dass ich schon nicht mehr lachen konnte (ich denke Aisling sollte vor allem lustig rüber kommen), sondern lieber weinend mit dem Kopf schütteln wollte.
