A razor-sharp, laugh-out-loud novel that re-imagines the cast of Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love. What could have been a disaster - a modern reimagining of Nancy Mitford's superlative comedy of manners The Pursuit of Love - is an absolute triumph. a recruitment officer representing four Russell Group universities asked an undercover reporter for the Sunday Times. After writing an article in The Sunday Times about her daughter's special needs - her youngest child has DiGeorge syndrome.

Brilliantly done, faithful but imaginative, tremendously romantic and very funny' Nina Stibbe, author of Reasons to be Cheerful*****************Marooned in a sprawling farmhouse in Norfolk, teenage Linda Radlett feels herself destined for greater things. Mitford never wrote a really good marriage (Fanny’s husband, in Pursuit and sequels, is the very definition of a nonentity), and it’s tempting to wonder whether she ever could. I thought the original might be coming out of copyright next year, when it’s 50 years since Nancy died, but apparently it’s 70 years after her death when it expires so it’s not for that reason. Knight’s characters are sparky and fun, and in some cases their relationships are crafted with more care than in Mitford’s original. This is perhaps because Knight, free from the innate pressures of the roman à clef, has enough distance for clarity. They rarely see anyone except Mrs Hopkirk, the cleaner, and their cousin Franny, who lives with her aunt Emily in a cottage on the estate. India Knight does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Mitford's original story but brings overlays modernity that makes it more relatable for today. But Darling is a treat , with whip-smart dialogue , larger-than- life characters , witty observations and a heart-breaking twist . It’s all an absolute hoot and Knight seems to be especially enjoying herself when it comes to Uncle Matthew, a man “of extreme and simple emotions” who weeps at the sight of particularly tragic old dogs and delights in trolling people on Instagram (“CLOSE YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU SMILE”). Linda’s dud husbands are the fleshily handsome son of a Ukip peer (looking ‘like he lives off parma ham and cream, like an old woman’s bloody cat’, Uncle Matthew fulminates) and an Etonian anti-capitalist. I actually snorted with laughter in several bits of it - particularly when Uncle Matthew and Davey get obsessed with Instagram. Darling is also in that vein, that serves a heightened sense of reality in a decidedly upper-middle-class world, where worries are real but they are less where the money for the mortgage is going to come from and more will they be able to afford a junior suite at the Ritz in Paris, or will it have to be a mere double room. The book is narrated by Frances, a cousin of the Radlett siblings, who has been sent to live with her Aunt Sadie and Uncle Matthew by her flaky mother.
